Casa Belvedere

Vaiano – Italy | 2011-2013

The project originates from the initial briefing with the clients who were very clear and straight regarding their expectations “…..We want a house that, although built from scratch, looks like an ancient renovated Tuscan farmhouse….”

The building, designed in partnership with my colleague Arch. Franco Bertazzini, is located on a slope dominating the Bisenzio River valley and is part of a village of ancient origin whose buildings date back from the middle age period.

Inserting a new building in this type of context was a great responsibility that required an in-depth study of rural architecture made up of spontaneous though harmonious volumetric compositions, of peculiar proportions and relationships between full and empty spaces. Trying to reconcile all this with concepts of contemporary living was a compelling challenge that led me to discover new aspects of what being an architect means.

There are contexts and situations that impose humility and “silence” to an architect because, in this cases, it’s not the architect that influences the context.  It is exactly the opposite.
